Repairing wobbly door window
« on: December 27, 2012, 03:22:29 »
Well on the way to finishing repairs to my window re an earlier post, thanks to those who replied and several excellent sections of the Technical Manual.  I am replacing the plastic inserts which fit in the aluminium clamp/sliders affixed to the bottom of the window.

In the Technical Manual one particular section refers to orange washers which, from what I can gather, are supposed to fit in behind the locating spigots, or pegs, on the plastic inserts. A previous owner has included some orange plastic washers which are in a Mercedes spares plastic packet but I can't read the part number.  They are not a snug fit on the spigot or peg and there is no corresponding annular groove to locate them on the aluminium clamp slider either.   The adjustment  grubscrew should allow for a snug fit on the door slide I would have thought, without the orange washers?

I can see no engineering benefit in fitting the washers and would like comments on (a) are plastic washers meant to be fitted on all three sets of inserts? and (b) if so what sort of useful engineering function they perform

The washers go onto the little pegs. Their purpose is to push slightly onto the side of the plastic inserts, thus giving the gap in those inserts just the right grip on the metal rail, as  window glass slides up/down in the door. Fine tuning of the grip is by means of the grub screws

(Note: washers are rubber O-rings in the pic - works as well)
