Electronic Ignition for 1966 230SL
« on: December 20, 2014, 01:10:38 »
I was looking at the Pertronix 1864LA through Summit Racing and their tech specs say it is for the Bosch 0231116D51.  My distributor is the 0231116047.  Summit reports that the 1864LA won't fit my distributor.  I expect that this may just be poor cross reference on a car this old but I wanted to check with the forum to see if others with my distributor have successfully used the 184LA?  Also, does someone have the number for a comparable Crane unit?  (I see these also mentioned on the forum.)

Thanks very much,
Harry

Hi,

Your '047' distributor is vacuum retard same as the '051' distributor.
I think the Pertronics 1864LA would fit. You would have to modify the small bracket same as in the '051'.

The Crane model is XR700

Geez.  Put the Pertronics in, have fire, but no start.  Set on TDC, Rotor Button at number 1 plug wire on Distributor cap, distributor mark aligned with Rotor button.  Pulled number one plug and confirmed strong fire.  Any ideas?  Any similar experience?  :-\

As follow-up, I have reinstalled the points/condenser system (at least for the near future).  I did a static timing test with the Pertronix and found that the timing had advanced perhaps 15 - 20 degrees.  I did have some problems being certain that the hex on the collar was perfectly aligned with the hex on the shaft but in the end, it seemed to be correct and I saw no indication upon removal that I had a misalignment between the two.  I could have gotten he car to run with the Pertronix but not where the specs say it should.  So, I returned to the OEM configuration - without issue.
