Best way to replace rear axle split boot
« on: May 04, 2015, 22:55:37 »
One of the worst repair jobs in my mind on a W113 W111 car is replacement of the rear axle boot.
These days the replacement boot and clamps as supplied by Mercedes are inferior to the original replacements.
I have a friend's 64 230SL that needs a new split boot and the only way I can see how to replace it is by dropping the rear axle completely out of the car when using the lousy boot clamps that Mercedes supplies.
With an expert 2nd opinion the way we think we might be able to do it in the car is if we had more modern screw type clamps with a narrow 5/8ths band width. The issue we have found is finding such clamps.
Does anyone out there know where to get alternative style clamps that would work? See pictures and part numbers of the garbage MB supplies.
Any ideas on dealing with the replacement in the car or should we just drop the axle and deal with it?
Regards
Peter

Peter, I wrote about this some years back. The original style 9mm Beru clamps for the rear axle boot are available today, however somewhat expensive. Germany or the US for vendors.

.../... They are made by Beru?
They were in the sixties, yes. Today I suppose they are repro, but these look and work just like the originals.
