What's NOT wrong with this one?
« on: November 01, 2004, 21:19:11 »
This car looks like it was once parallel parked between a Suburban and an Excursion and got the **** end of the deal; but of course as the seller says...

If you have been looking for a car like this; this is absolutely YOUR lucky day!

The vehicle is a 1964 Mercedes Benz 230SL. A real "Classic". Over the past few years the man has painstakingly, and sparing no expense I might add, just about restored this car to mint condition.

This is a perfect candidate for that little game you guys like to play called "What's wrong with this one". If you've got nothing better to do, see more of it at http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=6338&item=4500615506&rd=1

If you have better things to do, I'll go ahead and tell you, PLENTY.

Maybe after the election I'll be able to refrain from such lame and brainless postings but for now, I need the diversion.

US Citizens, please vote tomorrow. Let's get it over with!

When you scroll down to view questions sent to the seller by would be buyers one asked: "Has the car been repainted?"

Some of these "buyers" have no clue what they are getting themselves into sometimes!

Hey Ed!  What's going on with your car?

Ed, I've seen a lot worse get restored.  A LOT worse.

What I find curious about this car is how NICE the original firewall insulation is -- almost unheard of on a 230 SL.

Maybe someone should ask, "Is that a bullet hole in the soft top?"

Bullet hole or not, that's a really rare top. Those early 230 SL tops are like hen's teeth.

Mind you, I'm not saying this is a good car. I'm saying there are some things on the car that are worthy of attention.

For starters, it has the wrong tail lights.  The rocker panels were repainted body color.  Also, the hard top doesn't meet the rear deck very well.  I see a huge gap.  Why didn't the owner spend an hour to replace the missing door handles and trim before listing it on EBy?

sad car, certainly needs an owner with deep pockets.

pity the seller has such a mis-guided concept of what "MINT CONDITION" means.

Seems convenient that a lot of the receipts for work done are missing.

It is hard not to be cynical.

As bad as this car is, I think the worst thing about this car is the hype in the ad. It really makes you wonder about the validity of anything the seller claims. He would've been better off just saying that it was a restoration that he didn't have time to complete. You can't fault anyone for that.

Mmmm it seems to me that the work was done by someone who has NO previous experience with this marque. The painted trunk underside, the unfinished hood underside, the original dash colour left, the vehicle ride height seems off, all the chrome trim missing along the sides.

The thing that worries me is the refinished metalwrok on the inner wing which was obviously done without removing the engine and hasn't even been painted ???

I've seem worse but the description is off..........totally !

Caveat Emptor! (spelling)

In the UK you could be prosecuted under the trades description act, for promoting something that is not as descrided. However note that only applies to a commercial dealer who by law also has to provide a guarentee.

Well, well, will this be a wonderous car for someone to fully sort it out.
There are a million things wrong.  Not sure where to begin, but seriously this is a 1964 and those models had a vertical spare tire.  The later ones had a horizontal one.  This car has neither one, no well or tree stand for the tire at all.  This will allow the spare tire to bounce around in the rear as you drive.

Hi Guys,

Well, why we're all picking on this one I find it quite humorous.  My guess is that except for the handful of 113's in our hands, probably many still on the road are in all kinds of crazy shape!  That's what happens over 35-40 years...all kinds of "mickey mouse" (sorry Disney fans) mechanical and body work.
