Over the Top (again!)
« on: March 08, 2005, 19:48:41 »
Hi all. Had the fortune of driving my car to work yesterday -- and along the way, reached a milestone (actually kilometers)... Last time this happened, was 1980! Hope I'm still at the helm for the next one.  :)  (and hopefully have learned how to take pictures...)

Congratulation James!
May the third 100,000 kilometers be even better! In the old days Mercedes would send you a nice certificate, gold lapel pin and a 3" diameter porceline grille badge for each 100,000 kilometers. Now days you have to wait until 250,000 kilometers for a smaller version badge.

The early 3" diameter grille badges show up on ebay from time to time. They are collector's items these days and are fairly valuable. The 100,000 kilometer badge was blue, the 200,00 was red and the 1,000,000 was gold!

Stop driving it immediately and put it on ebay ...

"Virtually new Pagoda, no miles, never driven, pristine condition, museum quality.  I had it towed directly to a storage facility when it was new and its been there ever since" It won't last.

...reminds me of the ad a lady I knew put in the local paper when she was selling her autocross car:  "1969 Datsun 510 2dr, 26k, one owner, only driven in parking lots on Sundays. Call Denise..."

Hello James,

Not exactly what I was talking about, check these out.

The  200,000 K mileage badge was made in both blue and red. These are very good quality like the hood badges on your car.

Here is the old  blue 100K badge.

The new mileage badge  (smaller on the left) is given at 250K. The old blue 200K badge is on the right.

Thanks Joe. I really doubted mine was anything unique - but thought I'd ask. It came with the car -- but as you know, there's really not a good place for it on the grill.

Anyway, I am assuming I am in the 200,000s but it could be 300+. I have no car history prior to about 1976 at which time it had around 75,000 KMs...Not unreasonable to think that between 1963 and 1976 it made it "over the top"...

James,
You can go to your local Mercedes Dealer and get an application to recieve your free 250K badge which will come with a certificate and gold lapel pin!

Some people fill that funny space next to your license plate with badges on SLs or sedans. The long european plates do not have this problem.
