Original color?

Was this an original color for the 113?  Looks like Thistle Green to me.

Bidding is pretty hot and heavy on this one.  Bidders aren't wasting any time.

The text of the auction also addresses the substance of the other thread currently active. Comparing the various w113 models. Looks as beautiful as the 113 can be, if you like the green.  I rather like that green, whether it's original or not.

As I commented in the other thread on this Pagoda, I believe I know this local car.  For restoration, the owner selected a Benz color from the era, but not a standard offering for the Pagoda.  It's a beautiful combination.

Looked like one of the 107 greens to me, thanks for the confirmation. Data plate codes will show original color. Nice car but at this price the color should be original in my opinion for a "#1" car.

I actually like the color.  I still believe it's thistle green.  This color was used in the mid eighties if memory serves me.

Hauser, if it is thistle green or silver green metalic doesn't that affect the #1 condition claim or is that based on body and mechanical originality only?

I agree... and they claim it to be Moss Green..
I would send them a question on the color code and the trim code to compare with Original specs, for sure..
If you get the codes , I have the info..

Ask about the top , too...

Sure is nice

Forget the color.  For that kind of money I want the correct cigarette lighter.  :)

I just looked at page 19 of the new issue of Pagoda World where W113 price trends are listed.  For a 250SL in Condition 1 a price of $50,000+ was given (for Jan-Jun 2005).  The "Buy It Now" price of $39,000 would seem to indicate this car is quite a bargain IF the following statement from the eBay listing is correct: "A true #1+ car, no exaggeration!"

BTW this past summer I had the pleasure of seeing a gorgeous pair of color-matched SLs in the final stages of restoration: A 300SL roadster and a 280SL in what appeared to be this color (pale green metallic).  As I recall, the price for the 280SL was $69,000.  Thinking back, with all the exquisite work, not to mention the parts, that went into the 280SL I don't know how the restorer could afford to sell it for that price.

Peter Gick's car is a gorgeous example, but it's not a #1 car. A #1 is not driven. It's trailered. I've never seen his car (and, more importantly, his undercarriage), but I'm guessing it's a #2. (And, mind you, that's something to be proud of.)

As figured, the old hyperbole on eBay thing.

But if this one is the same color as those cars (300SL and 280SL) I saw in Arizona recently then it sure is an interesting & pleasing look on a W113.

Seller replied:"The car was built with Papyrus white.  It is a silver green that MBZ discontinued in the late 60's." I'm sure it is worth the $30Ks, how does a color change affect a #1 claim?

I guess the related questions are:

-was the color available on that model when it was made?
-how thoroughly was the color change? (was every last bit of white removed, including on the undercarriage?)

If it was done right (and it rarely is for these cars -- remember that W 113s only recently started appreciating), then it shouldn't much matter. Almost every silver 300 SL Roadster you see wasn't originally silver & that never seems to bother anyone.

I suppose if you had two comparable examples and one was in its original color and one had undergone a color change, the original would have an edge. The annoying thing for the owner is that the plate in the engine bay indicates the color code, so unless you change that, knowledgeable people will recognize the change pretty quickly.

You may want to ask if he has the Data Card.
I would expect that in that price range, as you/he can get a replacement card from Benz..
That will tell you all yuo want to know .
If it was Papy originally, then interior colors have also been changed b/c 717 code [ Papy] did not come w/that interior.
Actually, The Parchment did not come out until 280sl.
You should also see if the panel numbers match the chassis plate .. that usually tells you if the hood and such are original [ accident free indication]
I would expect a Data Card...
..Might be my eyes , but the fan looks like 230 ..might want to ask engine # while you are at it...
I am sure he will have answers to these relevent questions, as he did a nice job on it , that's for sure.

Just for fun, here's the 300SL roadster Mark was kind enough to show me at his place: http://www.ranchomerced.com/My_Homepage_Files/Page50.html

This photo doesn't really depict the true color of the car (nor its color-matching mates, the adjacent Gullwing, or the not-shown 280SL), but in person it looks much like the color of the 250SL now on eBay.  I'm not certain about this, but would be surprised if all three of those cars were originally of the light green metallic color.

One other thing that I find irkesome on a lot of repainted cars is when they dont paint the area ahead of the battery in satin black so you dont notice it when looking through the grille !

When its not black its really awful !

It may be the lighting but the dash looks like it was left papyrus white instead of painted body color.  That would be a glaring deficiency

I saw the same at first because the hood looked like it wasn't painted either but I think it's just the strong warm sunlight color making it "wash out". In the shaddows it looks like silver green metalic.

Any guesses on what's going on with this?  For a car that was just recently sold for $39K is now being sold by what looks like a third party for $7,500.00.

Beware, more ebay fraud!!!!! The crooks will steal the info on a car and put it on ebay for a ridiculous price. Some poor unsuspecting victim will pay the $7500 and think he is getting a great deal.  Just won't get a car though!!!  The crooks stole my info and did this very same thing.  It is out of control.!!!
