To answer John's question the square decal part # DB-teil Nr.00 584 1840 replaced The part # 000
584 8540 "Vorsicht" yellow decal starting in 1966 and continued till 1968 with a Red square decal
advising owners to use only "100" specification cap on the high pressure cooling system.
In 1969 mid year the same decal with, same part # 00 584 1840 was modified with bolder print red lettering with a red border and white background and used again. till the end of production in 1971. these early decals were paper with a gum backing and effected by solvents, petroleum products and steam and pressure washing of the engine bay.
It is intresting to note that the same decal with the same part number was used on the R-107 450SL to 560SL production that ended in 1989 in a reduced size format.
Some of the good after market decals offered to restorers are improved with a low sheen clear and a high temperature gum backing for improved durability. Offering the orginal look as they did when these cars were new.
