Title: Lighter wheels for Pagoda SL
Post by: Bob G ✝︎ on December 03, 2003, 11:18:58

Mercedes-Benz made some wheels that were used on one of the diesel models they weight less than the steel wheels on our cars and are a direct retrofit. Does anyone know waht they are?

Bob,

These wheels you mention, are they steel or aluminium alloy?  Our Pagodas were offered with optional aluminum alloy wheels after a particular year (1968 or so?) which were of course much lighter than the steel wheels with hub caps.

Bob,

Yes, these were off the 114 chasis I think.  They are aluminum but our hubcaps attach as on the steel rims.  I have these on my Tunis Beige car with hubcaps.  Big difference in performance-those steel rims weigh a ton!  I am traveling now but will give you the part number when I get home.

Best,

Tom

Tom & Bob,

OK, I understand now.  Tom, I now remember you talking about these the last time you were in Columbus.  Do these wheels only accomodate the later one-piece hub caps, or do the earlier two-piece caps/rings work as well?

Hello,
I believe these came on certain "123" chasis cars. They also used the same full 14" wheel covers like the later W113 cars. These wheels have about a dozen or so circular cut outs for venting. They are a little difficult to find since most "123" wheels looked the same but were steel. Many people are using the lighter aluminum wheels for club track events. If you like the original wheel covers better than the factory alloy wheels this is an alternative. You can have lightweight aluminum and still use the wheel covers. I remember Tom mentioning at the Blacklick Tech session, that these aluminum wheels improved the ride quality on his 280-SL!?

So they probably doesn't work with the earlier two-piece hubcaps... or they would look different

Hello Albert,
These aluminum wheels will not accept the earlier style small hub cap. Only the full wheel covers will fit.
