Title: Serial # trace
Post by: bogeyman on January 17, 2010, 20:40:32
Does anyone have a way to verify the original specs to a car via the serial #.
I know that if you can prove ownership you can get the data card from Classic Center, but what if you are looking at a prospective purchase?
I used to be able to via my local dealer/friend, but they sold and I lost that connection - anyone have another method?

Call the Classic Center and they will send you a copy of the data card.  This will show you how the car left the factory but will not reflect any dealer installed options.

CarFax and other Vehicle History companies are unable to trace past history of the Pagodas because they do not have the standard 17-digit VIN numbers.  Does anyone know of anyway to trace ownership/registration of Pagodas and other older cars?

The Motor Vehicle Department in some US states will issue a Vehicle History Report or a Report of  Registrations. Report costs a few dollars but can be very helpful to tracking down the past locations and previous owners of a car.

I have received reports from California and other states. I made the request when already owned the car and had the VIN number, proof of ownership, in case it was needed. Also, not sure if today's Rights of Privacy effect release of these reports...not sure if past auto registrations are public documents.

Some historic reports go back to the first time the car was registered in that state...others may have a limit going back maybe 10 years. As a minimum you must know the state involved and must have the VIN number.
