Title: Power steering problems
Post by: sarasotasl on April 03, 2010, 22:43:21
I have a 1971 280SL which started having steering problems.  Hard to turn, and makes a moaning sound when turning.  Found leaks on the front of the power steering pump.  Had that replaced.  Still had the same problems.  Replaced the power steering gear box, and after many times of bleeding air from the system I still have the same problem.  Noticed in the mornings a small puddle of power steering fluid on the garage floor.  We can't seem to get the air out of the system.

I need HELP!

Thanks

Bob

Hi Bob, assuming that your rebuilt pump and box are ok, and that your hoses and connections are not leaking, check the short hose coming off of the bottom of the PS fluid reservoir. It takes a sharp turn to get to its attachment to the pump and can be kinked, even if the reservoir is not mal-rotated. This can starve the pump for fluid. I had this tendency on my car and I used a E-Z coil to prevent it.
