Title: Pimp my ride?
Post by: Martijn on February 20, 2011, 17:43:40
Has anyone seen this before?

I bet it was not designed by Paul Bracq.

Wait a minute, not so fast...look at the details here...

1.  It has a 5-speed transmission which so many people seem to want.
2.  It has [seemingly] one piece glass Eurostyle headlamps which others seem to favor over US spec; even updated with new-tech lamps.
3.  Modern wheel size with commensurate tire size would alleviate the constant tire issue that befuddle us; gives us a wider choice set.
4.  Certainly looks appropriate without WW tires, as is preferred by some...
5.  The AMG V8 sure seems to solve the problem of so many people trying to get more speed and performance out of the Pagoda.
6.  Looks to me like a modern adaptation of the grill barrel and star; would probably eliminate the problem some people have with spending USD $1,200 for an OEM vintage unit.  The newer ones are probably plastic and less costly, I would think.
7.  The new style grill screens would eliminate again, the cost of vintage OEM ones.  My guess is they are less costly.
8.  Lots of people seem to abhor the look of bumper overriders on later model US spec cars.  Well, this version seems to have very clean looking bumpers front and back.

In other words, somebody has been listening to all the ways we suggest here, to "improve" the Pagoda, and actually built it.  What, now you don't like it?  ;)

Gets you thinking that perhaps the best improvement is to leave it all alone? :o

If you take away the spoilers and sideskirts, it would be much better looking. To me however it looks like a clever exercise in Computer Aided Design and rendering: I doubt that they've actually built such a car.

You'd be better off buying one of these: http://www.mechatronik.de/de/engineering/der-m-sl.html

I agree with Peter. Definitely Computer Generated photos. The other Mercedes shown in the link is nice but I like mine just the way she is :)

One of the peculiar things about this, is all the reports on the internet--various forums, blogs, "automotive news portals" ad nauseum.  They all seem to be saying the same kind of thing, and some of it is butchering the English language in the process, to the point of offense.  Read this gem lifted from www.tuningcarsblog.com:

The American GWA showed us just a remake of the Mercedes C111 see. And now they have again tackled an oldie. Meet the Pagoda SL.

Why offenses yourself to new-car and boring pens if you happen to make a straight remake of a model like the W121 on the bottom of a 190? According to GWA they combine new techniques with old forms. And there will be something like this to see a look that clearly inspired by the Gullwing America. Underneath, the standard 2.3L block have been replaced by a V8je of AMG. A 4.3 V8, ever present in the C43 AMG.

The adjustments to the look are so thoroughly to mention. Virtually nothing is more original form. The 17-inch wheels and adjustable dampers to ensure a tight grip. For now it is an exercise eenmalgie GWA, and the price has not been announced.

This stuff, re-reporting the same thing over and over again, is crude.  The above was copied verbatim.  Other websites with reference to the GWA Pagoda are similarly ridiculous.  I'm quite surprised I did not see, upon search, a "sponsored link" on the right side of my browser saying "BUY THE GWA PAGODA TODAY AT WAL-MART".

OMG!!! Its a fusion of the old with the new.

I personally like the old much better. You can't improve on a perfect design
 :)

cheers,

Joel

Nothing wrong "Restomoding" a W113. It's been done to just about any classic/vintage/old cars around. It's in the eye of the beholder. To each his own. Personally I like the rendition.

But alas, I'll keep mine original.

Just a guy and a computer drawing stuff up and posting it as a completed project hoping someone will bite and commission him to build one.
