Title: Least Intrusive Hazard Flasher Add-On
Post by: Theo on March 07, 2011, 12:54:45
I want to put 4-way/ hazard flashers on my recently acquired euro 230SL (better safe than sorry). Previous threads refer to a simple unit by Hella but in the picture the switch is big & intrusive, I am wondering if that is really the simplest setup.

I don't want to use the in-dash flasher switch that came later on 280SL's at the upper right of the steering column, which involves the sacrilege of drilling the dash. I want to keep the car exactly original, which it is so far.  So I want the smallest possible switch, either under dash or e.g. affixed with a discrete clamp low at the steering column (never drill an avoidable hole is the policy here).

Any ideas as to the most minimalist way of doing this (A) as to the physical placement of the switch, and (B) as to the wiring aspect of it would be appreciated.

Most ready made 4 way flashers are bulky because all of the switching is inclosed in a single box, I have an idea that would involve a simple illuminated switch (red) on a bracket under the dash that would engage a flasher and two relays that would be placed in a hidden location, If you are interested i could draw it out for you to make out of common auto parts store pieces.

Al thanks it would be great if you could email me a sketch.  It seems to me that the switch need not even be illuminated, if it made the blinker indicator lights on the dash blink as usual, but of course now in unison.

Mine is underneath the dash, to the left of the steering column - not very handy, but not used very often either...

Certainly later 230SLs for the USA market do have an emergency flasher to the left of the column.
None of the European 230SL ever had one? Just curious.

I will have to look up the pin connections where the combi-stalk plugs into the 12 pin plug, but the rest is fairly srtaight forward.

I will put it down on paper(for me that is still the easier way) later this evening, scan and post the drawing tonight.

Mine, which was on the car when I got it, fits into a small metal box which mounts under the dash using a single screw.  The wiring is such that when the switch is on, it connects together the circuits for the parking lights on both sides, and a flasher, separate from the normal direction signal flasher.

My switch is not as sturdy as I'd like it to be, so if anyone has a source for a better hazard light switch I'd be happy to hear about it.
