I just need to do a "sanity check" on this muffler I purchased.
Can one of you experts tell me:
1. Is the position of the inlet and outlet pipes (shown in the first and second picture) on the end oval shape of the muffler look correct to you?
2. The outlet pipes (third picture) have a slight angle toward the center of the car. In other words they are not perpendicular to the back panel oval of the muffler. Is that correct?
3. Can you look at the "bracket" between the two outlet pipes (fourth picture) and tell me if that looks correct to you. I'm referring to the lack of symmetry in the piece that is welded to the two outlet pipes.

Mark, the bracket and position of the inlet and outlet pipes do not look the same as mine. My bracket is flat (so the bumper can sit against it) and the position of the pipes is not as off set as yours. I don't know how correct my muffler is however as the PO put it on upside down. I had to have it cut off and turned around.

Looks incorrect to me. You may be able to get it to work, but it will never be right. Also, look in the pipes on one end, you should be able to see all the way through the muffler, since the originals have no baffles. If you can not, and it does have baffles, then the system will have the wrong exhaust" back pressure" on the engine.

Joe, I can see all the way through the muffler, so that appears to not be a problem here.
But, I intend on returning this if it is wrong, so can you tell me what is incorrect:
The angle of the tail pipes?
The position of the inlet and outlet pipes going into the out of the body of the muffler?
The "bracket" shape?
Or all of it or something else??
I want to come to your event with the right muffler!

Hi Mark,
buy MB part number 113 491 13 01 (about $185 from the right source) and you will not have any fitting issues - provided the other parts are not twisted also. ;)

There is an offset to the muffler. I don't think it would fit into that small space without it.

here is a photo of a MB muffler. Yes, the end pipes are not symmetric with respect to the oval shape but it appears that yours are offset in the other direction. The bracket should be flat and not angled, otherwise you'll have difficulty with the hangers and the insulation shield. The doughnut rubbers will last a lot longer with that shield!

OK, I made a mistake. It isn't my first, and I'm afraid it won't be my last. ;D
The position of the pipes might not be as bad as you are thinking, Alfred.
Please see my picture take from a similar perspective.
BUT, that angled bracket I have cannot be correct. If it is horizontal, the tailpipes are not.
Also, I looked at my current muffler, it has the straight bracket like yours, and I can see part of the part number 1301.
So, I will return it (I hope) and get the MB part. I was looking forward to that Ansa sound, but I will be happier if it fits and looks correct.

Yes, definitely off set in the opposite direction.

As the Benz Dr. wrote, the pipes should be offset with respect to horizontal axis of the muffler.
Here is a photo of an aftermarket muffler that has a bit of an offset but not enough.
When the rubber hangers are new - that is when you drive away from the muffler shop - it is not a problem but once they elongate and get a bit weaker the muffler will hit the chassis.
Installing the exhaust system is not a trivial job.

I see I never closed the loop on this.
Simply, I returned the ANSA muffler, purchases an original MB muffler, had it installed and haven't thought about it since.
It fit perfect.
I also had new chrome tips installed which, coupled with the new muffler, corrected the location issues I had with the old exhaust tips (they used to stick out too far).
