Title: grille screws_second go around
Post by: lurtch on May 20, 2011, 03:15:58
Hello All, this is a follow-on post

Sorry to be so pedantic about this issue but hey, I am obsessed by these cars!  - - - or should I say  possessed?

So during reassembly with the new cupped washer screw set it became obvious that of the eight holes that accept the screws, only four of them pulled down satisfactorily.

I spent a lot of my career working on commercial airliners where every nut, bolt and fastener has to be torqued, safetied, inspected and signed off in the logbook. As a result, I cannot tolerate loose parts on my machines.

The fix looks like this:

first photo :  shows how bad the upper holes were,

second photo :  shows the small slot I made with a Dremel tool to allow insertion of the Tinnerman nut.

third photo :  the hole is round, but way too large

fourth photo :  the lower holes required a notch instead of a slot

Regards, Larry

Hi Larry,
that looks like the way to go when the holes are too big for Joe's (JA17) copper wire fill-in trick.
Are you now planning to use the correct cup washers and screws for those Tinnerman nuts?  ;) :)

You should have seen the look on the Napa guy's face when I asked him, "Do you have Tinnerman's nuts?".  He didn't, but he could order me a case of whatever I needed.  Found what I needed to receive the missing screw in my fresh air intake by my windshield at Pep Boys, surprisingly.
