Title: Headrest Parts

Hi there.  I have a 1971 280sl and am looking for a part on the seat headrest.  I have been unable to locate a part number - maybe one of you can help me out.

There are holes on each side of the headrest and at one time it appears there was some type of cover over them.  Anyone know what I'm talking about - may take a photo if it will assist in identification...

Suggest you contact "Woody" at the Irvine CA, Classic Centre,  949 598 4845
New parts unlikely to be still available, if no luck check on Ebay for used head rests.

There are some small parts that guide and apply friction to the rods and can be bought from the Classic Center. I would recommend changing those while you are at it.

Headrest friction pads #115 975 00 23

Could someone explain what is the function of the side-holes?
Can those be added to head rests that don't have them?

They are there to give access to the  two 10mm head "thightening screws".  The later style headrests introduced around 1972 had a sort of selftightening mechanism and therefore no need for the access-holes on the side.

Hello Koboltfan,

These nice access holes to the 10 mm hex screws which Geoff showed are not separately available and they have never been.
You have to find a set of headrests with them or try to fabricate those on your own... :'(

The "tightening screws" that Hans describes adjust the friction between the walls of a cylinder in the head and a bushing attached at right angle to the rods that anchor the headrest in the seat.  This photo shows the individual parts:
