I'm think I've come to the realization that my exhaust system has been compromised. I have one muffler at the rear of the car and understand there is supposed to be another 'resonator' forward of it. Everything underneath is welded together (rather poorly) with numerous pinholes spewing exhaust at each weld. How was the system originally connected together - welded or clamped? Does it indeed require two mufflers and, if so, what is their combined function? Photos would be greatly appreciated!

If you look at the parts diagram online for the exhaust system at any one of the parts suppliers (try SLS in Hamburg) you will see the parts and how they fit together. There is supposed to be an intermediary resonator in the system.
Years back I installed a stainless system that I clamped together. Works great, no issues with the clamps.

Thank you. It's a nice driver, 150K+ miles. Previous owner had it 37 years and I bought it like this. Runs as well as she looks, but could idle a bit faster when it's cold.
You being in Chicago should come up to www.blackforestllc.com Mercedes tech session in April this year. A number of the Chicago guys do, and I'll be there.
