Can anyone tell me if the window winding mechanism on our cars is SL specific or also fitted to other MB vehicles of the period as well.
I need to replace my RH winding mechanism I think. Am missing the front slide fitting that is fixed to the glass and the rear unit is cracked but even without them on the glass, I cannot with the existing winding mechanism get the window to go all the way up as it appears to have slack within the sliding mechanism. Have checked and it is definitely not binding in the tracks, just an 1/2 inch or so short and has been progressively getting worse over the past few months.
Is it possible the winding mechanism has shifted in relation to the scissor slider mechanism fitted to the glass?
Any suggestions appreciated or am happy to pull it all out again and replace the winding mechanism if needed. Have ordered new slider units for for fitting to the glass for front and back

Hi Garry,
Can't see how that can happen unless the cog teeth have jumped a tooth. I suggest you go for
a second hand mechanism off a LHD car, should have less use maybe?

Left hand drive option is a very good idea, I have pulled the door apart other than taking the mechanism out so That was my thinking that it may have jumped a tooth on the winder but I cannot see without taking out. Wont pull it out until I get all the parts. Was interested in whether other cars had the same mechanism in them which is probably much cheaper than saying its an SL.

Yes Garry that would be cheaper. I am trying to remember from my experience of removing the window glass
I think all mounting points for the mechanism are slotted so it may just have come loose?
Might be worth a look before spending any money?

Hello Gary,
Check to make sure the two "upper limit stops" are not adjusted too low. They are located up at the top of the the door casting and actually keep the glass from going up too far.

The same thing happened to me, and it turned out to be the lever connecting the gear mechanism to the window. It had developed a crack, which gradually widened, so the window would not raise all the way, and it gradually got worse until the lever actually broke. I was able to get it welded, and it works fine again now. You might want to check yours -- if that's the problem, welding might be easier before it actually breaks. I don't advise replacing the entire mechanism -- I think it costs in the neighborhood of $500, even with a discount.

I loosened all the stops off thinking that may be the problem, no such luck. Looks like I just have to remove the glass and mechanism to see what is the real culprit. Was hoping to not have to do that but as the door is all opened up anyway, that can bee next weekends job.

This isn't like slipping a tooth on a timing chain - it wouldn't make any diffrence. Limit stops or something broken comes to mind.
I have a car in right now where both windows would only go down about 2/3 of the way. Someone put screws into the rails that were too long and the guides were hitting on the ends of the screws.
I'm thinking that the 113 winder system is only for these cars.

Garry you can buy a repair kit from MB part # 123 720 01 14 which will fit most 60's and 70's cars,
this will replace most of the pivots that wear.I have used them in 113, 108, and even back as far as
300sl 198 chas.

I have pulled everything out of the door that can come out other than the door fixings and I have even adjusted the door to body whilst everything is out which is much easier without the heavy gear inside it.
The glass is missing the front lower guide so whilst I have ordered new ones, I have made up a temp one shaped out of Plastimetal and fixed it to the glass to trial it all. The rear lower glide is cracked and not working properly so have refixed that and fitted back on glass.
There does not appear to be anything in particular that has caused the 1/2 inch gap but I think the glass has moved in its fittings to the lowest level of adjustment on all adjustments, and with some wear on the lifter it was enough to cause the problem. Have cleaned up all the parts, stopped for lunch and will try to refit it all this afternoon to see if it will work, then wait on the genuine parts to refit to the glass and the repair kit.
