Title: Nice day for a ride
Post by: 49er on March 04, 2012, 22:07:17
Had some snow up where this picture was taken a few days ago but beautiful weather today (mid 70s) so what better thing to do but get the SL out on the road. We had not driven it for about the past five weeks so she (both the car the and wife) were happy to go for a ride. The vineyards are still dormant but won't be long before spring will bring them back to life. Also the odometer turned over to 72000 miles (and few more by the time we got home). Quite a milestone for this car that itself was "dormant" for so many years.

I also hope all our members who live in the eastern US and have been hit with the punishing weather these past few days are safe.

John

Nice ...

I suppose there's never salt on the roads in CA?

Nice ...

I suppose there's never salt on the roads in CA?

I don't believe they do, primarily just sand on the mountain roads. Our home's elevation is around 1200 feet (366m) so we rarely get any measurable snow here but once you head up into the Sierra Mountains, accumulation often starts around the 2000 foot (610m) mark. This picture was taken around that level. Since the car is old (like it's owner) it only likes to go out when the sun is shining and the roads are dry:-)

John

PS. Back in '65 I drove my VW Bug over the Gotthard Pass in a pretty good snow storm. I sure appreciated the Swiss road crews keeping the road clear for us:-) No tunnels back then and we just missed by a couple of weeks getting to go through the new Mt Blanc tunnel on our way to Geneve.

Took mine out for a spin yesterday - it had been sitting since mid-November, but fired up immediately and drove like I'd just driven it days before. It always amazes me that a 47 year old car can do that...

I too, a few days ago, took my silver 280 and camera for a ride. Until this weekend we were basking in lovely sunshine and took the opportunity to take a few photos in the lovely Lincolnshire Wolds, an area seldom frequented by Pagodas!, two weeks previous, the temperature dropped to minus 14 degrees c and snow covered the same area which contradicts the myth that Lincolnshire is 'flat and boring'

Hi John. I knew you would take advantage of the weather! Amazing how we had three days of freezing and snowfall -- then back in the 70s. All in a week. I was itching myself but I have no driver's seat at the moment... waiting on GAHH to recreate a new cover for me. I guess I could sit on a milk crate or something?

Hi James, hope you get your seat back in soon. I don't think a milk crate would fit our car's image:-)

and hello Griffin, Nice photos of your beautiful SL sitting out in the beautiful English countryside.

Hello John

nice pictures, hope i get my car on the road again. Some problems with the temperature gauge. The first three thermometers were broken by Mercedes. I hope the 4 is in order and I can fit him.
