On my 1969 280SL there is an electrical outlet on the left side of the firewall. Does anyone know of a provider who makes replicas of the orgiginal trouble lite? Or does anyone have an original?
-
Hi Max.
These lamps show up from time to time on ebay; price depends on their level of authenticity.

I do have an original. These are very rare but do show up on Ebay from time to time, and are expensive. They were made by Bosch, and came as a dealer accessory. They were packaged in a Bosch clear plastic box with a yellow cardboard backing in the Bosch yellow.

Hi, could we have a photo of the emergency light, and one of the plug that goes into the firewall socket plse?

Max:
Take a look at the linked message below...it discusses these lights and has another link to a photo of
an original vintage light (probably made by Kaco).
Also a links to a website that was selling a similar modern light painted black.

These lights were made by Bosch and Kaco. The vintage lights I've seen (and owned)
were unpainted, had a round grey cord about 20 or 25 feet long. They have a clip to
allow attaching the lamp to a nearby spot to allow hand free use.
The bulbs are still available...change the bulb to modify from 6 to 12 volt if necessary.
There are other lights around that seem identical except they were made to fit the cigar lighter socket not the underhood socket.
These lights were used in several other German marques at the time including BMW.
They were also used for BMW motorcycles but with a shorter cord.
Originals come up on eBay from time to time at fairy high prices sometimes approaching or surpassing $200.

Thanks for the info and picture links, too rich for my blood...

On a related note, a 1980s-ish Quatroporte has a similar under-hood power port. Looks like the old MB one except the hinge is plastic instead of an actual hinge. The outlet itself looks to be the same. Definitely not a cigarette lighter style.
-
It looks to me to be the same as found on BMW motocycles eg. R1100RT models. Plugs are
available.
-
I recently bought this Kaco from the German EBay site for a very reasonable price equivalent of £30 including postage.
Modern equivalent plugs and sockets are easily available in UK for about £8

The plug is just a small version of the standard cigarette lighter plug; some plugs actually work in both this small socket as well as in the larger one. My boat had the same small socket size.
I use the underhood socket to trickle-charge the battery.

Hi, It's not about e-bay and rare, just search online for some dealers around your area who make, or rather sell portable work lights. I am sure you will find something to suit your requirement.
