Title: oil leak and engine number

I thought I saw a posting of a blow-up of the tach drive components, as in a picture of the stackup of parts.  Was I imagining things, or does someone know where I can find it again.  

I got my engine numbers and here they are:  130 016 32 01   280 SE/A

Any inputs?

Ed:

The numbers in your message are the cylinder head casting numbers...many cylinder heads have this exact same number.

The individual engine number is found an inch or two below the 5th and 6th spark plugs. Usually need a strong light to read these numbers. In older cars the numbers may be on a plate affixed to the engine, in later cars the numbers might be cut directly into the engine wall.

Here is a typical individual engine number (from a late 280SL)...this number (or the number of the originally installed engine) is on the Data Card. Example individual engine number 130 983 10 007661.

I parce this as: "130 983" shows it is from a 280SL; a 230 SL has "127 981" and a 250SL has "129 982"; the "10" would show it was a manual transmission; and "007661" is the unique sequential manufacturing number.

There are lists to show other engine codes. For example, if a car had an engine that started with "111 024" it indicates the engine was swapped in from a 280SE.

Others may correct me on this.

Also Richard, you  are correct on the location of the engine number and the details for it.

Ed try searching "verticle timing gear" for the tach drive gear assembly.

For the 280 (M130) engines, the sedan (SE) version engine number starts with "130 980" followed by 10 or 12 for the transmission code, etc.

Thanks guys.  The tach cable is a real kluge as it is.  Hope I can sort it out soon.  I'll look deeper into the compartment for the engine block numbers.  Thank you.

Hey gang.  Just wanted you to know that I have fixed the tach cable leak and the car doesn't leak onto my foot anymore (geez, that was hard to take).  The parts were obtained from the local Mercedes dealer for about 12.00 and installed in a couple of hours.  It took me a minute to figure out how to remove the old seal (1/2 drill bit, low speed, till it grabbed and spun it out of the housing).  All is good there.  Any comments on running a high detergent motor oil in this engine?  I have a stuck oil ring that is causing some blow-by.  Also, I looked for the engine number and also had Will Samples look with me and it is a blank plate.  Will says that this means it was a replacement block directly from Mercedes.  Looks like a 280.  By the way, Will Samples is a class guy that is working on some amazing cars with customers in Spain and Germany and still found some time to tutor me on some points.  His quality of work and trustworthiness are immediately evident upon entering his shop and speaking with him.  Thank you all for the help on the tach cable.

111.024 is a chassis # identifying a  280SE/c.
 The engine would be a 130.980
