alabbasi,
you cannot determine the paint code from the VIN alone, you need either the data card for your car or you need to look at the body and paint palte in the engine bay.
Everything you want to know about the date card is described here: http://www.sl113.org/wiki/DataCard/DataCards
and the body and paint plate is described here: http://www.sl113.org/wiki/DataCard/BodyandPaintNumberPlate
It pays to read the technical manual!  ;)

talking of which.... I've just bought various trims and items from a guy and the attached body plate was in a box of parts. Am I reading this as a very early car with a body no. of 08?, there ar 08's on the metal parts and 108's chalked on the back of trim panels.

Thanks,  the car is at a body shop, stripped down to bare shell and sand blasted. They're about to put texture on the underside and paint it so they asked me for the color. As the car is apart and not near me. I don't have access to the data card, which is why I'm hoping to get my answer though the vin.

I'll give my guys at the dealership a call and see if they can help.

You don't need the car near you to have access to the data card.
With proof of ownership, you can call the Classic Center and they will provide the Data Card to you at no charge.

And the second link Alfred supplied -- "....DataCard/BodyandPaintNumberPlate" -- shows you the actual location(s) where the paint codes you're looking for are located on the car itself (or wherever you've stored removed parts).  That's the first thing you see when you use the link he gave you.  It puts you into the relevant area without your having to negotiate any of the Tech Manual; you might enjoy and/or benefit from scrolling and otherwise poking around in that area of the Manual in this stage of your restoration.

Hello Neil,

No, that is not a too early car.
Although you read body no. 08 or so, the car has already the paint code plate and that one was not introduced before VIN 001176 for the 230 SL.

Body nos and production nos. were used repeatedly; only the VIN is unique.

Thank you Achim for sharing your expertise, I thought it very ullikely to be very early especially as it was broken for spares, although there was an early soft top with the wood and chrome trim.
