Title: Help Identify Rebuild Kit?
Post by: SilverSpear on February 27, 2013, 22:59:50
Hey guys,

A friend of mine gave me this bag of "things"  ;D and said it is for an old mercedes.
Any of you ever encountered such a kit before?

Hello,

An engine re-build gasket and seal kit comes with a bag of aluminum seal rings, copper crush washers, rubber o-rings and valve seals. i cannot tell which model Mercedes it is for, but a lot of the parts are universal and and are correct for you car. I am suspicious that the kit may be for  a Mercedes 4cyl engine since it has only 8 valve seals (all black) which may indicate that it originally came in a engine set for a MB 4cyl diesel. For a 4cvi engine you should have two idnetical copper crush washers for the valve cover bolts.  For a Mercedes 6 cyl engine you will have 3 identical copper crush washers for the valve cover bolts.

The large rubber O-ring is for the chain tensioner on your car. The large copper crush washer is for your oil drain plug. Lots of other seals that may be useful someday. I don't think the valve seals will work on your engine.

Hmm, several things strike me as this kit belongs to another car make.
The bag has none of the usual Mercedes emblem logo or lettering on it.
The seal that closes the bag is crooked and not the typical Mercedes perfection.
And there are no paper gaskets in the kit.
Most Mercedes kits include a few paper gaskets.

Hello Walter,

It may not be OEM but possibly aftermarket. Better pics would help us identify more.  Most of the gasoline Mercedes valve seals have one set of white teflon-like valve seals and one set of black valve seals.  The Mercedes diesel engines' valve seals are all black. as these are.

Hi Joe,
Yes you are correct as this looks like an aftermarket diesel kit.
Thanks for opening my eyes further on this.  Wasn’t thinking of the diesel angle.
Have a great day!
Walter

Ok guys, opened the bag and took some snapshots:
Note that the above 8 bits are all rubber and you can see them upclose in picture 2 below.
The rest are all metal except for the lower 9 seals.

I'm pretty sure they're for a diesel. I'm also more than sure thery're OEM.

The seals come in a head gasket set and they're in a seperate plastic bag with no markings on it because this bag is inside of the wraping with the head gasket set.

Thanks Joe, Walter and Dan, appreciate your assistance.

At first glance, I thought this kit is for the Injection pump or something...

Yes, those four "hat shaped" seals in the center of the picture are the fuel injector seals on an MB four cylinder diesel. You still have a lot of other metal seals which are the same and usable on  your Pagoda engine. Unusual that you have three small copper "crush washers" instead of two. However you will have a new set for your valve cover bolts, the next time you do a valve adjustment on  your Pagoda. Four of the small aluminum seals just left of the hat seals, are for the small metal by-pass tube on your water pump housing/ head. One of the larger rubber o=rings goes under the fitting at the tach drive and the second o-ring from the left is for your chain tensioner. The large copper crush washer is for your oil drain plug.  The four, large, ribbed aluminum seals at the top right, are diesel pre-chamber seals (no use to you). And as previous, the 6 black valve seals are diesel specific also. Most of the other aluminum metal seals are universal and should be of use. Just compare them as needed to your originals.

Wow, impressive Joe! you are amazing! Thanks for that.

The weird thing about all this is that 4cyl mercedes diesel engines or ANY cars fitted with diesel engines are not allowed to be driven on roads in this part of the world.
Only construction large size pickups, buses, 6 wheelers and similar heavy equipment can be diesel. Makes me wonder, why the original seller imported such a kit for such an engine. Maybe it was a stock or parts he bought, or by mistake, or... anyways..

Thanks again Joe, that is one valuable kit for sure.

P.S: The black valve seals are numbered 8 and not 6  :)

Yes eight, my mistake, two per cylinder for a four cylinder engine.
Title: Help Identify Tach Gauge
Post by: SilverSpear on March 13, 2013, 11:18:01
Hey guys,

This friend of mine came to my house the other day holding this Gauge in his hand:

He said he doesn't remember from where he got it and to which car it belongs. Anyone has any idea about it?
Nothing on the back side, a partially visible stamp reading 9.60 or 68...

P.S: He has three of this, all brand new in the box.

I don't think its from a car, maybe a motorbike with 5 speeds because of the blue marks on it.

Hello,

Could also be a commercial vehicle, like a truck, bus etc.
