I have no dash lights and I suspect the rheostat.
After reading the tech manual I decided to follow the instructions to bypass the rheostat by joining pins 5 and 6 of the under dash 12 prung connector.
I looked under my dash : there are 3 "boxes" attached to the bracket, and a "cylinder".
I presume the "boxes" are connectors. There is one on the upper side of the bracket (say #1) and two on the lower side : the closer to the driver(#2) is slightly different from the others, and brown, the #3 (between #2 and the cylinder) is identical to #1.
I know it is an easy procedure, but understand that for some it resulted in a blown #7 fuse and a shortcut.
So, as I don't want to make any mistake, I would appreciate if somebody could indicate clearly which is the correct connector.

I had already opened the two others, an, of course, they don't match the description.
So, I will try this one and hope I will find the correct cables (grey-violet and grey-blue)

Ulf, your were right : the correct connector is the box closest to the driver on the lower side of the bracket.
So, the last connector I opened was the good one.
On my car, (US 71 280SL), it is a Bakelite box, and the cover is fitted with 3 screws (instead of a "clip" cover on the other two connectors).
My dash lights are now working well, except for the upper right corner of the central cluster (I suppose a bad bulb), and the clock.
Is the clock light commanded by the rheostat, or is it independent ?

AFAIK, the clock light is on the same line as the dash lights, and thus connected to the rheostat.
