Title: Changing the column switch - early models
Post by: David S on October 09, 2013, 11:06:19
Hi all,

has anybody had experience in changing the indicator/wiper switch on a 230 (early type switch). Is it possible to swap without removing the instruments etc? Doesn't look like it is possible to thread the cable through the steering column assembly without removing it.

Thanks.

Hi, David,
Yes it can be done.
Unplug the plug for the switch under the dash.
You have to open up the plug and make a note of where all the wires go, as the plug will not pull through the column.
Once noted. remove the wires from the plug.
I believe the job is much easier with the steering wheel removed.
You can then unscrew the switch from the column and remove it, pulling the wires thru the column.

I replaced my indicator stalk on a 1964 230 recently; took an hour or two, and the only moderately difficult thing to do was to remove the steering wheel. But there are instructions of how to do this on the forums (somewhere, can't recall where).

I did it because the self cancelling function wasn't working. SO pleased I made the effort though!
