Does anybody know a list of celeb owners?

There was a list, but I can't seem to find it just now. Someone from your very own BBC came looking for it last year, for the now famous edition of 'Top Gear' featuring Jeremy C. falling in love with you-know-what.
From memory, please chime in:
- King Hussein
- John Lennon
- Jennifer Aniston
- Audrey Hepburn
- Colin Powell
- Stirling Moss
- Sophia Loren
- Kate Moss
- Peter Ustinov
- Juan Manuel Fangio

Thanks Richard - I knew I saw it somewhere but could not remember where. I did run a search but this 'only' searches the discussion forum I suppose:
John Lennon of the Beatles
Colin Powell, US Secretary of State
Tina Turner (US entertainer, reported in Vanity Fair Magazine
Charlton Heston (movie star, car was in an auction
Audrey Hepburn (Used her own car in a film)
John Travolta (reported in Entertainment Magazine)
Sir Stirling Moss, Race Driver (Photo of his car)
John Glenn, US Astronaut (Photo of his car)
Juan Fangio, Race Driver (Photo of his car)
David Coulthard, F-1 Driver (Published photo)
Peter Ustinov, (Reported in a book by Heilig)
Priscilla Presley (widow of "The King", the car is on view at Graceland)
King Hussein of Jordan
Jennifer Aniston
Kate Moss
Sophia Loren
Could you add these last four (from 'my' list) to the list on the website Richard? Kate Moss was mentioned in the recent Top Gear program, Sophia Loren is on a photo in one of our Authoritative Books (can't find that photo now @!#$) Jennifer Aniston mentioned in a recent Jay Leno show that she "bought an antique car, a 1968 280 sl" with her first big paycheck (now here's someone with the right priorities in life) and King Jordan is featured in the new book from the Classic Center "Faszination SL W 113" on page 55 (where also photos of Stirling Moss, Peter Ustinov, Fangio, as well as two other "stars" that I am not familiar with: a Hardy Kruger and Ewy Rosqvist-von Korff)

I made a mistake - Sophia Loren had a 300 SL (with that she is in a photo), not a 113 ...

Telly "Kojak" Savallas had one.
(What a pity: 7 Years ago this pretty
good 230 SL was bought by someone on an
auction in Hamburg, who was only interes-
ted in getting a rust free chassis for
his worn out 280 SL.)

I read in a cpouple of places that the late King Hussein of Jordan owned a Pagoda. I don't believe he did. He was an avid Mercedes driver and had one of the nicest Gullwings which he raced often.
I toured the Royal automobile museum in Amman recently. No Pagoda there, unless he gave it away. I will check.
By the way, the museum has a nice website that you can visit and see some of the King's cars. You can see the Gullwing at:

Hi Mo,
There's a b&w photo of King Hussein in his Pagoda in a book I have at home. He's sitting in the driver's seat.
Hope all's well with you!
-
Doug,
Good to hear from you my friend. I would love to get a copy of that book. What's the title? Is it still available? Or at least a picture of the King in his Pagoda.
Thanks
Mo
-
Mo,
The photo is in the James Taylor series called "Mercedes-Benz since 1945. Vol 2: The 60s."
If you look at the publications list on this site, you'll see a photo of the cover.
I've seen the book on ebay regularly and I'm sure you could get a copy on amazon.com even if it's out of print.
Good luck, Mo. Good to hear from you.
-
Thanks Doug. I will look it up.

Depending on your definition of famous... Martine McCutcheon has one (she of Hugh Grant's secretary in Love Actually fame)
(mentioned by aforesaid Mr Clarkson)
Tom Conti used to own my 280
-
On Top Gear Geri Halliwell (ex Spice Girls) stated that George Michael has one and he lent it to her !
She loved it but crashed it so he bought her one for herself !
I saw the picture of King Hussain with his Pagoda in the Mercedes Benz Club Gazette !

James Blunt - singer with the UK's biggest selling album of 2005 called "Back to Bedlam". The British Airways in flight mag for January had a profile of Blunt with a picture of a Pagoda and the caption "My Favourite Roadster". Oddly, the narrative was about a VW camper van.
Engineer, you might not be very famous yet but I bet you can sing every bit as well as the last half dozen celebrities mentioned in this thread.
Tosh, I lived in Belsize Park in 1988/89 and saw Tom Conti a few times driving around the area in a Pagoda. I can't remember what colour the car was but he certainly caned it.
A common feature of one or two of our celebs is that it may not just be the car that needs a de-coke.
Finally, if Kate's modelling career needs a re-launch maybe we could redo the poster with Kate and her car in every country not currently covered ... and some of those that are covered.
Regards
Andrew

My wife and I just returned from a few days is Sarasota, Florida and took the opportunity while there to visit the Sarasota Classic Car Museum. Built in 1952 and definitely not affiliated with the Smithsonian or anything close, it was a worthwhile hour of bumming around a pretty wide variety of old cars from the Nash Healey to the Corvette.
I was pleasantly surprised to see not one but TWO Pagodas in this collection, one (a blue one) which they claim was previously owned by John Lennon. I guess I have no reason to doubt that, few other cars in the museum were attributed to other celebrities; they also had a Mini that was owned by McCartney. Neither the Lennon 230 or the other Pagoda was in particularly fine condition but both appeared respectable. I noticed from a search that Lennon is listed as on of the celebrities that previously owned a Pagoda.

Detlef,
You are right with the very straight back window on the hardtop. The top line looks to be too long in the straight and slightly moving up. Looking at the hood reflection, looks like a street sign post was erased. Possibly to protect the address of Kate Moss?

Last night in the UK, a documentary of the making of the ''TAKE THAT'' Circus tour was televised .....
My daughter shouted out, daddy look it's Jason Orange ( Of Take That ) with his 280SL Pagoda, telling us how he had it restored it after 10 years of being locked in a garage, and showing it off. :)

Last year there was a red '63 Pagoda on eBay with all the documentation, including the bill of sale, made out to to Ricky Nelson of Beverly Hills. Here in the USA he gained fame and fortune at a young age via the '60's TV series "Ozzie and Harriet". His career success declined in the late '70's and he was eventually killed in a plane crash sometime in the early '90's. Another Rock-n-Roll Hero who died too young.

FYI: Hardy Krueger, young, blond German actor very famous during '50 and 60'. Passioned small plane pilot which led to his own TV show " Hardy's Bordbuch" depicting his flying adventures.
Came to Hollywood, I rememebr only two of his movies: "Flight of the Phoenix", with James Steward, he played the young german engeneer overseing the repair of that grounded plane, not telling anyone that he is actually building "model planes" for a living, not the full size ones.
" Hatari" is the other one with John Wayne and Red Buttons, catching wild animals for zoos around the world.
So, there.......
CHEERS !

I missed the Labor Day vintage race car weekend this year at Lime Rock Park in Connecticut but a friend snapped these two pics for me. Supposedly this Pagoda belongs to track owner and retired race car driver Skip Barber! Looks like the one that had been pictured in the MB Classic Center not long ago. You don't see this color often.

Watching Top Gear "baby spice" has one or two, I think it was one in the UK and one in France.
ESPN just had a profile of Martina and Chrissy, it opens and closes with the two ladies in Martina's white SL driving down the road.

a couple of years ago a 230SL was sold on eBay with registration documentation indicating the original owner was pop singer Ricky Nelson.
