I have a 68 280SL. I have clunk noises at the rear of the car sometimes. I found the rear part of axel suspension carrier dropped relative to front part and the two pipes contact each other. the rubber bushing is gone where they contact. Is it eary to replace a new rubber bushing? Do I have to drop the rear axle to do the repair? I think I maybe able to handle it if I do not need to drop of the axle. I recently changed the bushing near the center inside the trunk, I do not know if that caused this problem or not.

thanks, can I replace the rubber bushings without drop the axle?

It can be done, but it may not be a good idea. If that mount is worn is that fashion, your trail arm bushings may also need replacing. That's also a good time to replace seals and check/adjust backlash and replace the center rubber boot. There are also sleeves that may need replacement at the right wheel arm pivot points. Finally, when you replace that center mount, you need to adjust the position of the vertical arm, and it's easier done with the axle out of the car. It may look daunting to drop the entire rear axle, but it is in fact easier to work on the axle out of the car rather than fighting with two half axles dangling under the car.

what is the reason of two tubes not concentric? what part should I adjust?

They are not concentric because the rubber in between them has worn out.

I' ve redone two rear axles and can tell you there is no way I would try to do this job with the axles on the car!

can I delay repair of this bushing? will continuing driving as it is damage other parts?
