My friends 280sl power steering pump siezed on the way back from classic Le Mans yesterday,can anyone tell me if these pumps are used on any other Mercs as he was told they are no longer available,there is plenty of oil in the reseviour.Any advise would be much appreciated.Thanks. Mike. :'(

Mike, these pumps are used on most of the Mercedes four and six cylinder sedans, in the late sixties and early seventies. The earliest version (early sixties) will also work, but the shaft for the pulley on the pump is straight, whereas the pump after 1965 had a tapered shaft.

As a matter of interest the pumps were made by Vickers of the UK.
They have the only non metric bolts in the car :o

You are so correct Larry, the casual observer may not realize that the bolts heads are actually 9/16", since a 14mm wrench also fits just fine. However the threads on these bolts are not metric. One should be careful not to loose track of the spacer between the pump and the bracket at the rear.

Well, yes almost. I had the same assumption as you, Larry. However, this is a different Vickers, an American pump company.

From memory the thread of the mounting bolt is 3/8 UNF I believe.
