Title: Temporary Engine Swap
Post by: n/a on August 27, 2004, 15:08:10
All,

My 1968 280sl's engine is in need of a rebuild.  I have tons of time and ounces of monies, so this may be a long process.  However, I do have the opportunity (i.e., spare car) to throw in a replacement engine & transmission for the meantime. The available engine/transmission is from a strong running 1978 280CE (rated at 150-hp).  Both cars are automatics. Any comments on the ease or difficulty I would be getting myself into by installing the engine and possibly the transmission in the sl, and then swapping back out at some future time?

Better on the road than in pieces in the garage, right?

Hello Chuck,
This is not an easy match. The 280 CE engine is the M110 twincam design. It is heavier, uses different engine supports, The transmissions will not bolt up and the electric fuel pump is not sufficient to run this injection.
I am not sure the hood will clear everything it needs to.
Don't get me wrong it is possible but be prepared for a lot of work.

Joe,

Thanks for the feedback. You gave me enough info to know not to do it.  I thought if it matched, then....   Your feedback was exactly the type of feedback I was hoping to hear.

Chuck - you would be better off trying to find a replacement sedan engine (M130 injection). This will bolt right in. If you are lucky you may find one for a reasonable price (say, $1,000) that could last you many more years. Of course, loose engines cannot be tested out before buying, so there is that risk. But if you find a car that is heading for the scrapyard with a good running engine, this might do the trick.
