Title: Fuel Pump problem - need new pump?

My car would start for a few seconds then stall, then it would run extremely rough. I thought it may be the CSV but we checked it and it is OK.
After a bit the fuse for the fuel pump blew. We changed the fuse, then it blew again.
The mechanic says we need a new fuel pump ($1540)
Where can I find a new or rebuilt bosche pump?

injection pump? or fuel pump from the tank?

what year and model?

I am just in the process of swapping out the FI Pump from my 64 230 (since its been sitting for 15 yrs)....needs cleaning I am guessing.

I purchased a replacement pump and am installing that today.  Was pre-owned from eBay seller.

You can rebuild the fuel pump but I would find out what is shorting and causing the fuse to blow.

There is no fuse on the FIP.  Intex, It is not hard to work on but if you aren't into that, yes the pumps are a bit pricey, tricky, and a bit messy to complete.

If you feel up to it, disconnect the pump wires at the pump and try activating it directly through a 15Amp.  It should sing as it turns at a very high speed.   That way if the bearings are shot or the impeller is gummed up, the fuse will blow rather than over heating the pump.  Often the impeller just gets stuck to the bottom case.  But it take special orings to seal it again.

I think the Fuel Pump on this model '70 is a bosch 69651 at approx $700. I have not seen any refurbished units.
How long should it take a mechanic to replace this?

Maybe an hour in a shop.  3 in the back yard.

Take some time to do an internet search. If you cross-reference the part number only and don't include "Mercedes SL" in your search, they can be had for a whole lot less...

Finally purchased a rebuilt unit from a very nice forum member. It now works great after a 3 year sleep.
The old rebuilt bosch fuel pump last 3 years and 40 miles of service.
