Hi all,
Does this look like the correct Automatic Transmission filter for my 1970 280 SL?
My old filter does not have the rubber piece in the shape of a U as seen on the attached picture.
Thanks !

See attached image. There should indeed be a rubber lip on the screen filter, in U-shape.
Note the orientation of this however.
Note: Some filter brands have come delivered with the lip in the wrong orientation, or, there is no rubber lip present :o

Thanks Hans !
OK, but mine is exactly as you "wrong" picture is.
So, by re-orient the lip, do you mean I should pull it off and glue it down in the correct orientation?
I would not want to use any glue that might come loose with the fluid and heat.
Have you re-oriented the "U" before? How did you do it?
Does anyone know if I can re-use my brand new cork gasket. I've already torqued down the pan, but I have not put any fluid back in the trans.
Thanks !

No I haven't. I re-phrased my previous reply
As I understand it, there was a batch of filters delivered with wrong orientation...
Can you perhaps go back to the vendor and obtain a correct part?
I do not know if one can re-glue the "U" rubber lip oneself. I would suppose it is not trivial - this rubber would be attached with some industrial type fastener and attachment process, when manufactured
Re: your cork gasket, I guess you can try re-using it. If it later shows any leaking fluid, then replace.
Soak this item in ATF some hours, before mounting it.

Thanks again Hans.
I'm so glad you asked about the orientation.
I wasn't even looking at that and if you didn't mention it, I would have sealed it up and not known that it was wrong.
I have a good filter coming from the Classic Center.
So, I'll be all set.
