Title: Dashpot - Throttle Damper on manual 230SL
Post by: Steven A on July 13, 2015, 23:31:51
Dear All,

I would appreciate advice re the throttle damper requirement for manual 230SL's.    When I purchased this car (many years ago now), there was no throttle damper, and I understand that many people removed these to enable the engine to return to idle faster.    The damper is covered in http://www.sl113.org/wiki/Fuel/Throttle.

Has there been any technical bulletins from Mercedes regarding requirements for this?.

Any advice appreciated,

With thanks, and regards

Steven

I'd be interested to hear more too, as my Mercedes specialist engineer says that mine (on a 1964 230SL manual) needs replacing - but neither he nor I can find a replacement.  >:(

I think most people go for this:  Wells /Carter DP103 Dashpot (Mopar part #J8127729) and modify the stud length to fit.

The function of the dash pot is to give a moderated throttle closure to prevent cutting out on over-run.
If you're good at toe and heeling then you can do without it, otherwise its best to replace it when it's failed.

Julian,
in Europe search for Opel part 826912
http://www.opel-classicparts.de/catalogsearch/result/?q=826912
It should fit.

Thanks to all for advise and suggestions,. now looking around for damper and bracket, will report back any success (otherwise I will go for the Opel part from Europe).

Toe and heeling...I have big feet, so can be done!

re the damper, once engine is up to temperature, I have never had a problem w/o the damper, but suspect the damper may assist in the warm up period until the engine is up to operating temperature

With regards
