Title: 230SL Transmission Replacement
Post by: danb on November 27, 2015, 15:58:45
I have a 1966 230SL in which the transmission is slipping.  My mechanic tells me that I need a replacement transmission. Total cost installed is $5300.00.  Is this a fair price?  Does replacing the transmission affect the value of the car?  Is there anything else I should know about replacing the transmission?

Then you haven't got a mechanic, you have a fitter.

I'm sure someone else will be able to recommend a specialist local to you who can overhaul your transmission for a lot less than you've been quoted.

Find a good mechanic, or better still a technician, who will know how to correctly install and set up your overhauled transmission.

I have been quoted recently $2500AUst (about $2000USD) for a swap over overhauled replacement transmission for my ’65 230SL.  am going to have mine done so that I keep matching numbers and have the car off the road whilst I wait for it to be done.

The price you have been quoted is over the top.  Find a decent mechanic that knows what they are doing with the MB gearbox.

Garry,

I suggest you have your transmission evaluated by MZF Peter Schmid Transmissions in Burlingame ( 650-348-3990 ) to determine if you need a replacement.  These guys are MB transmission experts with a good reputation.

When people start bidding and actually paying more for numbers matching 113 cars, then having this will be worth more. Until then, it's pretty much a feel good thing.

A "slipping transmission" indicates to me possibly a bad clutch?

I have dealt with these guys on two transmissions and was very happy with their work and service.

They charged $1750 for a rebuilt trans.  Installation should be around $1000.
