My alternator mounting bracket has some nuts inserted in the mounting holes, see picture IMG_1681.jpg. I guess these nuts have been added by a previous owner. Is my guess correct?
My plan is to remove the nuts in order to mount the original washers and spacers, picture IMG_1677.jpg.
Another question: What is the correct color of the mounting bracket?
-
Yes, it seems the nuts have been added to center the alternator.
Original mounting had 4 rubber bushes (and maybe insert bushes within the rubbers) Can't be sure about the inserts. 230 was a long time ago!
Personally, I would look for a 280 type mounting bracket. Its quite a lot beefier...

p.s I wouldn't know about the colour, probably black ???

Cad plated.

This is quite timely because what with the current ridiculous prices of the usual 55A upgrade alternator I am looking at alternatives.
Whoever did that to your car has obviously been down the same path and come to the same conclusion as I have.
That is: if you want a neat and tidy installation you're going to have to spend £500 or so on the correct alternator.
If you can put up with the untidiness as per your picture you can install a £100 alternator from a Ford Capri.........

American speak for the 55a Bosch alternator is AL74X, albeit without the integral regulator, but the brush plate can be swapped for one with a regulator.
Sometimes available for less than $100.00

I just bought a Bosch AL74X from Summit racing for $95 with a $5 or $10 core charge which I thought was pretty good. It will need a spacer to use the original 230SL pulley and I haven't tried it in my mount bracket. I got a later style mount bracket from Naj, and don't know if the bolt/spacer configuration is the same.
This is my original bracket and mount, it was yellow cad plated, and these are the various rubber washers and cups that were used. All looked pretty original and stock to me, and I'm certain it is the original alternator.

Scott, thank you for the very good pictures. I can see from your pictures that I am missing the spacer sleeves, part no 127 155 01 53. Do you also have pictures of the tensioning bolt?
My project is to restore the engine back to original, so I will keep my 35A alternator. Is it really necessary to upgrade to a 55A alternator on these cars? I believe the power consumption is quite moderate.
-
It is. I had a customer who lost his voltage regulator and he drove over 200 miles only on battery power.
-
Photos of the tensioner. I have none of it assembled though which is a shame so I can't help you more than that.
Probably agree there is no need for an uprated alternator if the car is stock, I am undecided yet if I will fit a radio or use a Bluetooth speaker. If I fit a radio then I would try and hide an amp and an active subwoofer somewhere so the uprated alternator would be of benefit then. Mine needed overhauling anyway so it seemed a good idea to upgrade, same with the starter.

Thanks again Scott.
