Title: R129 500SL
Post by: stickandrudderman on May 09, 2016, 06:17:51
I have a 500SL for sale that was originally sold in Sydney, Australia. Do any of you Australian members know if that means that the car, having already been imported once to Aus,mouldy present a particularly attractive proposition to an Australian buyer? In other words, would they have to pay import duty again if they were to re-import it from the UK.

Colin,

Due to its age there are no import duties, however there would be GST (Goods and Services Tax) at 10% on the invoiced purchase priced the shipping costs that cannot be avoided.

No import duty? It used to be, as I recall, 90%!

Thanks Garry.

They have cut import duty on all cars down th 5% over the past 10 years and aim to be at 0 bu end of decade and for those countries that have a FTA with Australia, to 0% is already in place. All Auto manufacturing in Australia is being phased out by 2018 completely.  Ford next year cease all Australian made vehicles, GMH Holden the following year with Toyota also ceasing and Australian manufacture.  All new vehicles in Australia after that time will be imported.

Vehicles older than 25 years do not attract import tax and have not done so for over 30 years.  With the introduction of GST, importing vehicles, in fact all items sold in Australia other than food, medicines and a few other odd ball things, all attracted the Goods tax of 10%.

Changing times are happening here on vehicles.

I seem to remember that you could import an American made Capri cheaper than you could buy an Australian made one.

Colin
If you pay the fuel, I'll drive it to Oz to save the shipping costs ;D

You're welcome!
