What is the purpose of this light and was it ever required anywhere?

Rear fog lamp. I'm not sure if it was required anywhere, but it was typically found on European Pagodas. Sometimes, I believe you'll see it installed below the rear bumper as well.
By the way, look how nicely that chrome trim fits underneath that EU rear license plate. It's a nice detail on European cars that we don't get here in the US. It visually "bridges" the rear bumpers really nicely. Then again, our plates aren't shaped the same so it doesn't really work as well visually.

The ones I have seen have been mounted on left lower bumper. Exact opposite of the tail pipes.

When you are speeding down the autobahn in heavy fog at 250/KPH (some nuts do) that's when you realize the purpose of that light. :)

Hey all you central Europeans, test my memory here...
As I recall, that single fog lamp on the left rear is required in Belgium, yes? On trips to Belgium it seems all cars have it, but only rarely on other euro-registered cars. Am I right or wrong?

If my memory serves me correct there are a LOT of cars in Germany with this light.

This is a fog light and need to be used by heavy fog, by sight around 100 meters, the light is brighter as the standard rear light.
In the 60's it was an option, these days every car in Europe do have it.

My 2000 C230 has a "rear fog light" Do all newer Mercedes have them? I found that the best fog, heavy rain rear light is the four way flasher. A number of years ago I was following my wife in the 73 Triumph Stag that we had back then and the only way I could see her in the driving rain was that she had her four way flashers on.

Bruce--you actually had a Triumph Stag that ran in the rain? :) Must have been one with the Ford Cortina engine?

The infamous rear Hella fog lamp appears again. I would like to mount mone and noticed how this one was mounted on the top perportation of the left rear bumper of the green Metillic 230SL. Was this done after the car was purchased ? were did you mount the switch and how did you wire it?
Exactally what I wish to do!
