I attended the mecum auction in Indy last night. It was a cool experience. I got to check out all 3 pagodas that went through. I spent a good hour with the cars. Actually being right next to the cars, before and after they went to the stage. A 280Sl went for $90,000.00--On a scale of 1 to 5, ( 5 being the best) with Michael Salemi's or Alex D's cars being a 5, this car was a 2 or 3 at best. Too much wrong to even discuss. It had some kind of wooden steering wheel, with a Mercedes emblem on it. It was not a Nardi steering wheel. I have no idea where they got this thing. It looked like someone carved it. I will end discussions on that. I wanted to drive back to WV to pick up my car to take it to Indy to get some of that money. The second one sold for $55,000. It had a round rear muffler, with one exhaust pipe. The paint was chipped all around the hood area where it rubbed when opening. The grill had many large and small dents. The engine bay was not detailed at all. It looked like it had never been cleaned. Too many incorrect things to discuss. The 3rd was the worst. The paint was not good, and had very large treaded tires. Looked like snow tires. They had done something to the springs, because the car set way too high. It had a shag carpet set in it. The owner refused a $40,000. bid . Must have had a higher reserve after seeing the money the other 2 brought. I don't intend disrespect to the owners of these cars. I'm making a point that for the conditions of these cars, they brought a lot of money... You can go to mecum auction website. Then log on with a e-mail address only. No password needed. Click Indianapolis auction. Then click results. Then check both Friday and Saturday results. The pictures look way better than the cars actually were.

Mike, what do you mean Mike and Alex's cars being a 5 ? Are you referring to the scale 1 to 5 on the Hagety web site? If so 5 would be the bottom and 1 the top condition.

PS I like to think my car is someplace between 2 and 3 and Mike's more in the 2 Hagerty scale. Below are photos of Mike's car and mine at PUB last year side by side.

I meant 5 being just about as good as you get. I don't know how cars are scored. The point that I was trying to convey,was that these cars were way below the standard of cars like Michael , Alex, yours, and a lot of the cars I saw at our PUB. I should be corrected on the numbers, which I really don't know much about. I do know much about our W113, as do most of us W113 car owners in this club

Rolf , on a funny note. Since these got $90,0000 and $55,000, then some that I saw at our PUB should fetch at least a million. ha ha

Rolf. With the Hagerty classification, the cars sold at mecum would both be 4. I don't agree with just 4 classifications. I feel the ratings should be on a 5 point system, with 1 being the best of the best.

Regarding the 280sl with the interesting wood steering wheel. I remember this car (steering wheel) being auctioned not too long ago and recall it was from some huge collector. For some reason it stuck in my head.
A couple of minutes of google time and here is the auction where it sold for about 52K two years ago. The John Scotti Collection.

Good catch Kampala. Looks like they did some work in the engine compartment within the last 2 years. Different firewall pads. And I agree, what an awful steering wheel.
