Title: Fast idle solenoid
Post by: cfm65@me.com on January 14, 2017, 15:43:27
Hi Guys,
I believe the 280SL fast idle solenoid has an internal permanent magnet which pulls the plunger back when fast idle is no longer required.
Does the fast idle solenoids fitted to the 230SLs and the early 250SLs have the same magnetic 'pull back' function or was it left to the throttle return springs to do the 'push back'
Regards
Chris

I don't think it's a two way solenoid and that it only pushes out. I believe that the throttle linkage return springs should provide enough tension to retract it after activation.

TKS Doc,
Yes, mine is also like that(pushed back by the return springs in the system)
However, I thought the later models had a permanent magnet to assist in the 'pull back'.
With the slop in my early 250SL system, a pull back magnet will make life a lot easier.
Any further comments will be much appreciated.

The really late version uses a vacuum controlled throttle body and the CSS is deleted.
