Title: D.C. Magnet
Post by: mBdrvr on January 18, 2017, 04:59:17
I'm reinstalling the D.C. Magnet in the car and tested it to be sure it works.

When 12 volts is applied to it, it extends but does not retract when power is removed.

Is this the way it was designed or is it defective?

Which DC magnet are you refering to?
I am not sure what you are talking about. Is this perhaps the one mounted on top of the inlet manifold, the one called the fast idle solenoid? The one that extends in order to increase the idle speed when selecting drive or reverse?

Yes that's it. The parts book calls it a D.C. Magnet.

That's how they work. Return springs on the throttle linkage should pull it back into place.

I've had cases where the CSS wouldn't return properly and the only way that I was able to fix this problem was to replace all of the ball studs and throttle caps on the linkage. Once everything is tight it will work perfectly.
