Title: diff noise
Post by: reg on May 11, 2017, 23:43:15
Looking for some input,  Am having a differential noise that sounds like a pinion bearing.   I just replaced the drive shaft center bearing and that help a little.   Hoping for ideas as to the cause and possible remedies.   The car is a 1966 230sl

I guess you have already tried it but can you get any movement pushing on the yoke? It should be all solid.

Thanks for the input   am going to check on the condition of all my bushings first.  Maybe I missed one and the noise is just transferring to the body.

Yes if that central rubber mount in the trunk is bad you might get metal to metal contact.

When are you hearing noise? While driving under load, under no load, or while coasting? Each one of these conditions often means you have a different problem to fix. Noisy rear axles are often best fixed with a replacement axle. They're not easy to repair, time consuming to R & R, and repairs will not always be successful.
