Title: Cleaning fuel pump ultrasonically
Post by: Joe on May 20, 2017, 02:53:45
Has anyone tried this with the long pump? I'm thinking immerse the lower section of the pump in a solvent in an ultrasonic tank and flush it out. Is there anything inside that might be damaged?

Joe--I have a small-ish ultrasonic cleaner; small laboratory size. It's a Branson 1800. They warn against using any kind of flammable solvent.
Might have to search for one that will work with a flammable liquid...and not put you or your basement/garage in harm's way.

Good point, Michael. I would do it outside.
Having read here about dismantling these pumps and the problems with breaking screws, I'd like to clean it out without taking it apart. I think I'll remove the filter screen and then do the ultrasonic act with kerosene.

I cleaned a few pumps by now and I have an ultrasonic cleaner. The limitation is the size of the part, they can barely clean the injectors, the pump body is huge compared to the parts that usually get cleaned. Why not just dismantle the pump the right way. Yes screws can break but there are ways to fix that and I have done it successfully. If your pump is 50 years old, you have 50 years old rubber o-rings that are now hardened. Is the pump seized or having low flow/pressure?
