Title: Short fuel pump alternatives and repairs
Post by: kftca on June 04, 2017, 01:45:29
Hello All: The fuel pump on my 1970 SL has started leaking at the o rings connections around the electrical leads. As you all know, a new pump is quite expensive!  2 questions...1) has any one ever used an alternate (cheaper) pump as a substitute? (I think a pump with 11- 19 psi output and a flow rate of 4 litres/min should work based on info in the Haynes manual and info found on the forum here). I would put this in was a temporary while I get  the proper pump replaced or repaired. Question 2 : I have read that to replace the o rings around the electrical connections, the wires must be unsoldered. I don't like the combo of soldering guns and gasoline!  Has anyone found a trick to do this or can recommend a procedure to safely replace the o rings? All advice greatly appreciated.  Thanks!

Hi,

There is no way or possible easy trick to replace the terminal sealing o-rings without unsoldering the terminals that I know of.

As a cheaper alternative to the Bosch pump there are several possibilities.
One is the Carter p4601HP that produces sufficient pressure and flow.
The carter pump is noticeably louder than a Bosch pump, and some tweaking is required with respect to the mounting/brackets.
There have been various discussions regarding this, a search will give more info on this.

Hi,
another alternative is the Pierburg fuel pump: https://www.sl113.org/forums/index.php?topic=23448.msg167821#msg167821 .

Gents: Thanks very much for the tips! I took my pump off today, definitely leaking at the electrical terminal o rings. As others have noted on the forum, the  o ring profile is square (not round)  so I expect these will be hard to source.  I can get the Carter pump here locally and think i will put this on as a temporary.
[As a relative newbie....I am so impressed with this forum!!... thanks again!]
