Hi guys,
I am currently making some improvements in my 1970 280SL.
By the time we disassembled the auto transmission, some residues on the carter led me to believe I should go for a complete review and repair.
Do you happen to know experts in Europe that will do a good job.
I leave in Portugal but I am willing to send it away if the quality and price are worthy.
All ideas will be welcome.
Many thanks
Francisco

Auto transmissions are one of the few things that we don't do in house but that's because when I worked at Mercedes in the 1980s we had an in house transmission shop. The guy who ran it left about the same time I did and set up his own shop so from that moment he's always done my transmissions and there's conceivably nobody who can do them better.
I gave him one a few weeks ago and because he stamps each one with his own reference he was able to tell me that he'd rebuilt this exact same box some 20 years ago!
Whenever I get the chance to buy an old box I do so and I give it to him to recondition because he likes to work at a rather leisurely rate and I need transmissions on the shelf ready to go.
So, in answer to your question, I have perfectly o/hauled transmissions in stock for 230/250 but nothing at this time for 280.
We do have one in progress but it'll be a month or so before it's ready.
£5000 exchange. (plus VAT).
Not cheap but then quality costs.

Thanks a lot.
I would like to rebuild mine to keep originality, once all I have in the car was factory delivered.
I understand that the work pace may be a challenge.

Hello Franscisco
Usually a rebuild is new bearings, clutch plates, brake bands, with all seals.. Full bench test at all vacuum and engine speeds Unless water or debris entered the main brain thats the complex bit.
Kind regards John

Hello Franscisco
Take a look at these guys. I have not (yet) used them but heard good things about them from a friend of mine. You may not want to send yours around the world for a rebuild but it may be useful as a reference.
