The car is a 1970 280 SL, engine block has no number stamped in the typical place. I am replacing the front oil seal. the seal removed is a Goetze marked 827 SSPRUW 45-63.5
The seal I purchased is an elring and is labeled 45X67/72X12/13. This is the seal Bubs Benz sells and is used in their shop. It is too large. I am assuming my original seal is 63.5mm outside diameter and 45 mm sealing diameter, while the replacement is 67mm outside diameter. I measured it and got that reading.
So I have an unknown block in the car. Anyone happen to know where I can source the correct seal or what block requires this size? thanks for any responses.

Sounds like Bud's may have sold you the wrong seal. All the seals for the six cylinder Mercedes engines of the era are the same size. The four cylinder engines of the era used a larger diameter seal. I suspect that the seal you have is for a four cylinder engine.

Hi,
the original MB part numer should be A0039970347 with this size 45 x 67/72 x 12/13 equivalent to Elring 284.785.

FYI, I would buy the seal from Mercedes and only because of materials. They use a hi performance Viton material that will last a very long time. Others could be plain vanilla Nitrile that will harden with age. You can probably get that elsewhere, but all of the seals I have bought from Mercedes in the last few years have been a brown colored Viton.

Make sure you do not have part of the old seal still in the block?

Gave the local Mercedes dealer the vin and they are ordering in the seal. hopefully it will be correct. Joe don't think I left anything in the block as the seal came out relatively easily and looks intact to me, but will certainly check.

The new seal will need to compress a bit during installation. It is meant to be a very snug fit. That's why I normally ease the sharp front corner of the opening a bit, to prevent damaging the seal.

I used a VERY thin film of Permatex #2 on the OD of the seal as a preventative for leaks. It would seal minute scratches in the seal bore where the rubber lip may not. What are the thoughts about that?

I have a 1970 also. Not sure if my seal was original or not but it was actually 2 pieces. There was a hard outer black ring and then a brown inner piece that contained the lips. The new one I put in was a one piece. Maybe yours is the same and the outer portion is still in.

Looking at your other post I think you have the 2 piece seal also. I think your outer ring is still in.

if I have the 2 piece seal, how is the hard portion removed? I have a protruding lip that stands just slightly proud of the block now.

Problem solved. New seal is in, my retired mechanic who is expert in Mercedes gave an assist. The old seal was 2 piece and easily removed. New seal inserted before sleeve. Now going back together....thanks for the assist one and all.

Just out of curiosity, what new seal did you use?

Ordered direct from Mercedes dealer.
