Title: 1.5 inch Hole in Firewall
Post by: Charles 230SL on November 27, 2019, 02:23:40
I've often wondered what the purpose is for the firewall hole pictured below. The hole appears to be factory and is blocked with a rubber plug. It measures approx 1 1/2 inch diameter.  I've looked through numerous photos of W113 firewalls but can't find anything using this particular hole.  any ideas? thanks, charles

That looks like the hole for the trouble light plug in.  You do not have the plug in connector wired in that picture.  I believe it was an option.  you can still buy the light but today an led gives a lot more light

thanks Bob, but my trouble light plug-in (attached pic) is well above the hole that I'm referring to.

Looking at the picture provided by WRe, the hole appears to be the one on the driver's side labeled "Stopfen" but there is no corresponding hole on the passenger side. My car is a 4-speed; is it possible this hole would have been used for automatic transmission linkage?

stopfen translates (according to google) to plug.

The position I believe are the two drains from the scuttle box - air entry for the heater.

Looks to me like #O on the pic which is called "gasgestange" or gas linkage.
Both of my 4 speed cars have a plug in that hole from the factory.

Yes, Stopfen means plug.
May be this helps. (Not my picture or car)

My 1970 280 has the holes marked “Stopfen” they are about 20mm.  The one on the driver’s side is in the same location as yours.

I translated the holes from WRe's picture into English :

1 fuses
2 socket
3 Tachometer Shaft shaft, water thermometer
4 speedometer cable, oil pressure
5 fastening bkv
6 washer fluid hose, hood lock
7 wiring harness
8 heating inlet / outlet
9 access heating valve
10 throttle rod

The holes marked "Stopfen" are, I think, just technological holes (for paint) used then also for maintenance (e.g. wax application). The plug to fill them is A1139870044. There is a lot of these plugs in the car...
