Could someone check the size of the hex heads on the screws that retain the splash shields right behind the front tires? I ordered a set of screws from Mercedes ($$$) but the heads were totally wrong so I ordered a set from Belmetric for pennies each. I just want to make sure the heads are 8mm.
Thanks in advance,
Pat

in my car the heads are 10 mm. But after 51 years this may no longer be the original size.
-
SLS say 8mm.
-
I wonder if it is supposed to be an 8mm screw with a 10mm head instead of the supplied 5.5mm screw with an 8mm head?
-
I can't say for sure. whether they are original, but the screws on my car are 8mm. Only thing I can say is, they have not been touched since 1982.
-
Just checked. On my 280 SL,which I believe to be original are 8 mm. My 250 SL which I think is correct, but not original, also 8 mm.
-
SLS say 8mm.
For what it is worth, SLS are saying 5.5x16mm screw, 8mm head.
-
8mm head for sure. Sometimes the quick, incorrect fix for an oversize hole is using a 10mm head with a larger diameter thread.

Actually, and I am sure you have seen this, I think I have two types of screws for these panels in the parts list:
N 007976 005202 there are 12 pieces
and
N 007981 002306 four of them
Someone posted decoder of the N numbers to DIN, then you would need the DIN decoder to decode all this...

Thanks everyone! Now I am covered. One of those little details that has gotten totally out of hand. Now I just have to paint the splash shields. Unfortunately I originally thought they were gravel guarded and I sprayed them with really good stuff. After sanding, scraping and trying solvents I finally figured out to torch the backside so the stuff lets go.
Pawel, I think the 4 screws are tiny phillips head screws at the ends of the sill cover.

If someone ever needs a specific DIN broken down/detailed, I still have a "Klein DIN Normen" book from my time at the TH Darmstadt

I have the pdf, someone, perhaps you, posted it here. Takes me ages to do it. And I do not remember if Daimler N part numbers are straight DIN numbers.

While the dimensions are correct the drawing in the link to the lexicon is misleading. According to the Mercedes specs this screw does not have a permanent washer attached.
I believe the only safe way to find out what the original screws were made off and looked like is to check the Daimler DIN survey list (attached below) and then the decoding list (Schlüssel Liste).

Thank you Alfred.
Here is the key on the picture (from this forum). I found the document Alfred is quoting (I think earlier issue), also for this Forum. Happy to place it in technical Manual if it is not there.
-
Hi Pawel,
I added it already to the manual in 2017. ;)
https://www.sl113.org/wiki/Documents/SparePartsList
I believe the #7 decoding list was provided once by Chuck Taylor. There is also a #15 floating around; neither one has all the the different DIN parts that Daimler used in all cars.
-
Alfred, thank you!
I have the list No. 16. Probably known, but I can post if need be.
Shvegel, the washers from the part list for the 12 screws (corrected Dec 31):
N 009021 006103
replaced by
N 009021 006208
I do not see any washers for the 4 small ones.
-
Pawel,
The current screws from Mercedes are not only not correct they are wildly expensive. The screws from Belmetric are not only closer in form but much much less expensive as well.
-
Shvegel, yes, I am aware of that, I am quoting only the PN so that we know what the part was. At Mercedes it may also happen that the part number changes for replacement after you placed an order, so you get a different part number than you ordered. When I order some parts from them I clearly state on order: if the PN changes into a different one, I do not want the part.
For the N part numbers, however, you can just look up in the catalogues provided the DIN designation to see what the part was and them find it on the market.
What I should have said though was that the PN for washers was originally
N 009021 006103
replaced by
N 009021 006208
Now it is correct, sorry.
I quoted these numbers to be able to determine if a regular or widened washers were used.
