Finally decided to take the old switch off the car. It's located in the side of the engine block just beneath the FIP. It's made by VDO and labled 17C +2C-3C. It's part of the ignition system. Does anyone know the part number for this item?
Many Thanks!

Jeff,
What system is this switch a part of, or what does it do?

Hi Rodd,
The switch is part of the ignition system. If the engine temperature is below 17C the switch is closed. In the closed position this switch causes the two way valve to remove vacumm pressure to the distributor causing the timing to advance with a pickup in idle speed. As the engine warms the switch opens and the two way valve returns vacumm to the distributor advance. I would say it works with the FIP thermostat to increase idle when cold and possibly reduce exhaust emissions.
