Title: Missing Engine Number
Post by: meche on October 11, 2021, 00:57:50
Can anyone suggest how I may find the number of my engine if there is nothing stamped on the normally found surface.  I have a 68, 280SL Pagoda that I am trying to see if it has corresponding, original numbers(http://engine number.jpg)

Must be a replacement engine, so it's not the original one.

Do you see a small plate saying Tauschaggrrgat there? Otherwise it is difficult to say. This plate was on engines that came to the car as dealer\original replacement engines. They then did not have the engine number or had it stamped by the dealer.

Which means little in the scheme of things. This isn't a ' Cuda  that can be cloned - engines numbers mean little on our cars.

Hello meche,

I can tell you this with certainty: when I re-engined my 230SL with a short block from Metric Motors
the renewed block had no serial number because they ground it off. It was just part of their overhaul
process.

... and there's the possibility to make any Pagoda 'numbers matching' - just grind off the old, and punch in the original number. Who's to ever know and so what does it all mean. I like the Corvette sense of humor. I left my replacement engine 'bare' although I do have the correct dies to punch in any number.

I would put piece of paper where that number should be and rub pencil. Think you might be surprised unless it's my eyes playing with me but there is faint number there.
