I’m going over the stuff again before the oil pressure test and I don’t like that bolt. There is nothing attached here on my engine but the length of the bolt puts it so deep inside that I’m wondering how does it not touch the chain. Again, that is what I got and I foresee a problem. I have the short plug ready for pickup in the morning. Is there something I’m not aware of? I appreciate the advice.
Thanks
Mark

Mark, picture missing.

If that is the bolt on the left of the block outside the drive for the pump I think there are 2 lengths based on if your car has power steering or not as the lower bracket for the pump mounts there. Also the end should be rounded. If not it is most likely the wrong bolt.

If it is that bolt Shvegel is talking about we have part numbers and lengths of both with and without power steering on the forum. They were both available at the dealers. I can try to look up if you confirm it is this one.
It plays a role in managing the timing chain, kind of important. It also needs to be sealed well, otherwise you may have a leak there.

Here is the pic. Big guy right beside the IP oil line.

That bolt is 24mm long and power steering reservoir bracket is supported at that point as well. I just measured the bracket thickness and it’s 4mm. That puts these bolt awful close to the chain. I would like to understand what is the purpose of it.

My understanding is that it is suppose to keep the chain from jumping off the rails so to speak. Not supposed to be in contact during normal operation. Assuming nothing is worn and the bolt is the correct length, it should not contact the chain. I think there is also supposed to be a sealing washer according to the EPC (007603 012120) which would give you more clearance and provide a seal to keep the oil spray in. But has been awhile since I dealt with this.

Mark, I have exercised it, look through this thread: https://www.sl113.org/forums/index.php?topic=27136.msg194539#msg194539
Also here I asked about sealing, but this one you may not need as you know it yourself: https://www.sl113.org/forums/index.php?topic=27061.msg193930#msg193930

Thank you Pawel. This link has been a great help.

Seems like you could also use a thread sealant on the bolt if you were concerned about leakage. Most use that for some of the bolts on the front side of the engine that are exposed to fluids.
-
I think it is, actually, necessary to use thread seal on all the bolts protruding the engine walls... my mechanic did not and I had to go through quite tricky exercise of sealing these bolts in the engine, including front of it. There are threads where I asked for help on it.
The bolt that is a hero of this thread was part of that exercise.

Done for now.
My PS bracket needs to be refinished before installation so I just used 2 washers to make up for it. Very little sealant on the end of threads and one hydraulic washer on the block side.
Thanks again.
