Title: Headliner foam thickness 1/2 inch ok?
Post by: jzearfoss on August 06, 2022, 23:49:59
I am replacing the headliner on my 1968 280 SL. Can anyone think of any reason I should not use 1/2 inch thick foam instead of the standard 1/8 inch thick?

You certainly would not want to use 1/2 inch on the front crossmember. That would not fit in well with the cut outs for the roof latches or for blending into the chrome trim pieces. Probably would also leave lines/protrusions against the support bars as I don’t thing they stick out 1/2 inch.  The more I think the more problems I can think of specially the sides of the hard top.

Where exactly is the hardtop foam supposed to go???  We used 1/4" adhesive backed industrial black sponge rubber and cut it to fit into the oval recesses and nowhere else... (since the original black foam had desintigrated) we have no idea what all should be getting a foam treatment.. Are there any illustrations showing where the foam is to be applied??

I'm getting my top ready for reassembly and have found this forum extremely helpful. One question I have about the foam choice. Does it have to be foam or can jute padding ,such as used under carpeting, be substituted? Of coarse the oval holes along the side would be opened up for proper airflow.
