Hi
I have just picked up a stencil set for my Dog Dish hub caps ( 230 SL ) .. actually, just got the hub caps too.. the large one piece ones were on my car.. the wrong ones( trying to recreate the original look)..
And, they don’t fit.. ??
Are the hub caps coming in two different sizes( or more) or are the stencils for another model altogether.. ?

There several stencil sets for different wheel covers. Perhaps this might help you:

I'm sure there are people that can get the dog dish stencil to work, but I'm not one of them. I gave up after a couple of tries and just masked instead. Required a bit more prep time, but it worked perfectly.

So, I wonder what caps these fit? They are much bigger than the W113 stencils.. but they look the same…or, could I have the wrong caps.. I haven’t fitted them to the rims yet.. what is the diameter or radius of W113 dish hub caps.. does anyone know?
I’ve just bought the rims and they are being powder coated at the moment…

Hi Brennie,
I just measured mine and they are 245 mm diameter,

Thank you… now to check..

Perhaps the dog dish caps you have are for 13” rather than 14” wheels?

Thank you.. that’s a thought.. I thought they were all one size.. but, I too measured them..245 across…

Have you sold your single-piece hub caps? I've got a 280 and it's been fitted with the two-piece 230sl trims as the previous owner preferred them. I'm keen to swap mine.

I think the dog dish style hubcaps require a different wheel than do the one piece design. I believe their wheels have special nubs that hold the center cap in place. I’m not certain but I think they’re pictured in the tech manual section.

It may be true that the 280 wheels don't have the nubs needed to hold the 230-style hub caps (as opposed to the full wheel covers) in place. However, the 230 wheels will definitely also hold the 280-style wheel covers, as shown by the number of 230s with the incorrect covers on them.
When I bought my '66 230SL, it had the 280-style covers on the wheels, and I put some effort in converting back to the hub caps and beauty rings that belonged on it (much nicer, IMHO).
In Andrew's case, he has the 230 covers on his 280, so it may not be true that the 280 wheels won't accept them.
Andrew, I still have my 280-style full wheel covers, and if it made sense from a shipping cost point of view, I would be happy to swap with you. I'd have to get them from storage and check out their condition, but I believe that they were in nice shape.

The stencil you have is for the later one-piece trim. The dog dish one is smaller.
